In what could be a threat to public safety, 58 prisoners have given jail authorities the slip while on parole in the last 10 years. Many among these absconders were convicted for grave offences.
According to data available at the Kapurthala Modern Jail, over 1,000 prisoners were granted parole in the last 10 years. A majority of them were convicted for murder or drug peddling.
Sources said, out of these, 73 were reported to be parole absconders. Three among these are female. However, 15 have been nabbed again.
Police are yet to locate the remaining 58 absconders, some of whom jumped parole 10 years back. Officials said in some cases, police confiscated their guarantors at the time but even after that they were released on parole.

{{/usCountry}}“In all such cases of parole jumping, jail authorities inform local police stations who are supposed to arrest absconders again. We provide information and coordination to trace absconding prisoners. In some cases, their guarantors are arrested,” said jail superintendent Kulwinder Singh Thiara.
One of the major parole jumping cases reported from Kapurthala jail is that of convict Romi Uppal, son of a slain cop. He is one of the main accused in the murderous attack that left Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza in a coma for two years before his death. He reportedly jumped parole and flew abroad two years back.
