More than 7,000 acres of agricultural land and over 12 villages in Fazilka district remain inundated after heavy rain last week. The waterlogged villages included Shijrana, Ratta Khera, Halimwala, Salemwala, Manu Khera, Nukrein and Kheo Wali among others.
Fazilka district last week witnessed the highest-ever rainfall of 235mm, which led to a floodlike situation at many places. The rain claimed lives of six people as roofs of some houses gave way due to heavy rain.
Though the local administration is on its toes to tackle the situation and a number of suction pumps have been deployed to pump out water from fields as well as residential areas, yet many low-lying areas of the district remain flooded.
A number of government offices at Abohar, including a local government school for girls, are yet under water.
The drainage wing of the irrigation department was also working on a war footing and KS Pannu, secretary, irrigation, Punjab, visited flood-affected areas in Fazilka to take stock of the situation.
Pannu also inspected the Jalalabad Mauzam and the Ditch Channel drains, which are main rainwater-carrying systems in southwestern Punjab. He found that that the drains were functioning to their full capacity of 13,414 and 1,827 cusecs respec tively.
