Condemning the state of drug menace in Punjab, Rohit Chahal, national secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), said Punjab had earned the notoriety of being a leading user of drugs, which had made the ABVP to initiate efforts to tackle the menace.
He was addressing a gathering at the national convention of the ABVP.
Urging the state government to cut the drug supply at the grass-roots level, he said ABVP would force the government to take initiatives to curb the menace in the interests of people’s health and well-being.
Stating that women were not safe anywhere these days, Chahal said the ABVP regularly held workshops and awareness programmes to spread awareness about the measures needed to be taken for the safety of women.
He stressed on electronic surveillance on college campuses so that incidents of rape and sexual harassment were often reported there.
Lashing out at the UPA government for making no initiative for the propagation of higher education, Chahal said the previous government was only interested in minting money from students, because of which only private universities were launched during its tenure.
“The government should also focus on the academic needs of students from economically weaker sections and open universities that suit their pockets as well,” he said.
