Industrialist Baldev Singh (69) can’t believe that one of his grandsons killed another because of jealousy. It doesn’t happen in good families.
“Had natural death claimed my grandson, Jaskirat (14), the family would have accepted it as Waheguru’s will. But the fact that my elder grandson, Parvinder Shelly (18), murdered his cousin is killing us. As head of the family, the shame’s on me,” says Baldev.
The wealthy man from Kapurthala has stopped speaking to his eldest of the three sons, Jaspal Singh, whose boy killed Jaskirat. “But I die every day when the memories of my grandsons’ playing together hit me,” says Baldev. “I am grandfather to both the murderer and the victim. I now ask my wife how our blood turned out to be like that?”

“We have snapped all relations with Jaspal and his wife, Baljeet Kaur, the mother who poisoned Shelly’s mind,” says Jaskirat’ grandmother, Bachan Kaur. “Jaspal told me Shelly wanted to meet me, plead innocence. I said no. I saw the footage of Shelly’s taking Jaskirat away just before he was killed,” says Baldev. “My only wish is that my grandson gets maximum punishment.”
Jaskirat had a rich father (Baldev’s middle son, Narinder), while Shelly’s father had fallen on bad times and moved out of joint family 20 years ago, to a house gifted by Baldev. The rest of the clan remained in Kapurthala’s rich neighbourhood of Rose Avenue. In the last few months, Jaskirat had come close to the jealous cousin who would kidnap him on April 11 and strangulate him. Three months on, the family misses Jaskirat’s laughter and his predinner banter with grandfather. The boy’s mother, Ajitpal Kaur, remains in shocked silence. On May 8, the crime spired by television was solved.
