The mob hurled abuses at the policemen and pelted the building with stones. They did not even spare the ‘mehndi’ artists who were doing their job at Clock Tower Chowk and flung their chairs at the police station.

Deputy superintendent of police (city) Satish Kumar later reached the spot and pacified the crowd. Anil Hans, state convener of Bhartiya Valmiki Dharam Samaj, had gone to the police station with a complaint against a local jeweller who, he alleged, had pointed gun at him with an intension to kill.

Station house officer (SHO) Amarnath was not present at the police station at that time. Contacted over phone, the SHO is understood to have told Hans that he would look into the matter in the morning which agitated the leader.

The jeweller, however, said that four persons, including Hans, had come to his residence at Birbal Nagar in the night and started quarrelling with him. He alleged that they forcibly took out his licensed revolver from his pocket and fled.
