Close on the heels of the recovery of some rare artifacts from a shop at Sirki Bazaar near the historical Quila Mubarak while carrying digging at the site, the probability of the existence of a tunnel on the campus of Government Rajindra College has raised curiosity among residents here.
After the college authorities said there could be a tunnel on the college premises, Archaeological Survey of India's sub-divisional officer (SDO) MC Sharma, police officials and a college team inspected the site on Saturday.
Sharma said a 10-12 feet deep pit was there at the site but it was not possible at this point to conclude that a tunnel existed since the hole could have developed due to several other reasons.
"He said the topography of the place also does not support the theory of existence of a tunnel. But to reach to any conclusion a team of Punjab archaeological department has been called on Monday that will conduct digging at the site to find out the truth," he said.
The college authorities had claimed on Friday that a deep pit developed at the playground on the college campus which could be a tunnel.
The antique objects recovered during digging inside the shop in Sirki Bazaar included a metallic brick carrying impressions of stamps in Persian language, idols of Hindu deity Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi, a pair of earrings and pedals.

The recovered objects have been seized by the Punjab archaeological department that is probing their age.
Archaeological officer Rajinder Singh Bath said the department still had to get report from the laboratory to clearly establish the age of these objects. The department is of the opinion that a brick with words "620 Hizri" written on it indicate that it might belong to the Sultana dynasty.
The city is known for popular Quila Mubarak which is also called Razia Sultana Fort as Razia was imprisoned inside the fort. The fort is a protected monument.
