The country’s highest national flag will be hoisted on next Independence Day function at the Attari-Wagah joint checkpost. The height of the flag will be 300 feet, thus beating the height of the 268 feet high Tricolour at Ranchi.
As of now in Punjab, the highest national flag at 170 feet is in Ranjit Avenue locality along the Amritsar bypass. This flag was hoisted by local bodies minister Anil Joshi a couple of months ago. The foundation stone for construction of the concrete base at the check post was laid by Joshi here on Tuesday. The project is being funded by the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT).
Giving details, AIT superintendent engineer RK Sekri said the mast on which the flag will be flutter will be permanently 25 feet below the ground. The base will be 30 feet X 30 feet in length and breadth, he added.
“The foundation (base) will be built in such a manner that the flag fluttering at 300 feet will be able to withstand high velocity winds up to 180 km an hour,” he added.
The flag itself will be 99 feet in length and 66 feet in breadth. The total length of the mast will be 325 feet, including the 35 feet that go down into the concrete base. The SE said Rs 1 crore would be spent on the project. The minister is keen that the project be completed by August so that the flag is hoisted on coming Independence Day. Its location is also of vital importance which is close to the border and within the joint road checkpost with Pakistan.
