The police are still groping in the dark in their efforts to identify the assailants who fired at Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s Punjab vice-president Brig Jagdish Gagneja (retd) on Saturday.
Sources said, the only lead with the special investigation team (SIT) are grabs of CCTV footages of different locations showing the masked bike-borne attackers. The police think the attackers started their journey somewhere near Phagwara.
But the police were yet to reach a conclusion where did the attackers go after committing the crime.
The CCTV footage obtained by the police from an electronics showroom in the Red Cross Market shows the attackers crossing by the camera. Within seconds, there is sound of gunshots and attackers can be seen crossing by the camera on their way back.
“However, even after analysing CCTV footage of many houses and commercial outlets in the area, the attackers are nowhere else to be seen,” a senior official said.
Police say there is possibility that attackers parked the bike somewhere near the crime spot and took shelter in the area. The police are also searching local bicycle stands for the bike they used. Jalandhar commissioner of police Arpit Shukla said there were some leads, but they can’t be shared.

WHY CITY AREA CHOSEN FOR ATTACK?
Police are trying to solve the riddle that why Gagneja, who as per police was being followed by the assailants from his house, was attacked at a busy place when he had crossed many isolated locations. “May be the attackers hailed from the city and were confident about their handlers and the hideout,” he said. A CCTV camera installed at workshop in Chaheru, Phagwara, shows the attackers adjusting their face-covers.
TEAM IN GANDHINAGAR TO ‘IDENTIFY’ MASKED ASSAILANTS
The commissioner of police said a police team has been sent to Gujarat Forensic Science University, Gandhinagar, with the CCTV footage to get a fair idea about the faces behind the masks. “Our team has reached the university and experts are on the job to retrieve the faces,” said Shukla.
