The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday sought Punjab government’s response on a petition filed by Punjab Private Self Finance Dental Colleges’ Association, challenging state’s move to entrust Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Fardikot, with making admissions for these colleges for seats under the management quota.
The vacation bench of justice M Jeyapaul sought government response by July 7 on the petition in which the June 10 notification of the government has been challenged by the colleges’ association.
The court was told that the colleges were ready to fill the management category/left over seats/vacant seats as per the rules and merit of National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) or Pre-Medical Entrance Test (PMET). The petitioner has sought directions for BFUHS to appoint a panel to monitor the admissions done by the institutes themselves.
It was argued that by involving BFUHS in the admission process of management quota, the state was interfering in the administration of these colleges. Appearing on behalf of the association, advocate Manish Kumar Singla said the petitioner would be satisfied if the respondents would take the responsibility that they would fill all the management quota seats and in the event of any seat remaining vacant, the respondents would pay the course fee for the vacant seats.
The court was told that in the past due to the lackadaisical attitude of the BFUHS, the seats had remained vacant, resulting in losses to the state and the institutions. As many as 199 seats remained vacant in 2013, followed by 455 in 2014 and 487 in 2015, the association told the court.
