Investigating the case in which a policeman deployed on security duty was injured by a bullet on November 27 when deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal visited Ludhiana, police claim that it was an accident and not deliberate.
On Thursday, commissioner of police Paramraj Singh Umranangal called a meeting of all officials investigating the matter and reviewed their findings. The incident had embarrassed the department and the police are under pressure to crack the case at the earliest.
In the meeting, officials said that prima facie they found that the stray bullet that had hit constable Gurvinder Singh was fired in the air and had hit the constable while on its way down.
They said someone from a marriage procession crossing the road had fired in the air and the bullet had hit the constable while on its way down. They said had the bullet hit the constable directly, it would have been fatal.
Meanwhile, the police seized around 20 guns from people living around the hotel Hyatt Regency, where Sukhbir had put up. The police have sent the weapons to the forensic lab for tests.
The constable, who was deputed near the zonal office of Punjab National Bank adjoining the hotel, on security duty, was hit by the stray bullet in the left shoulder. He was rushed to hospital. The commissioner of police on November 30 had formed special teams to investigate the matter.
