In a blow to the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC), it got only Rs 84 crore , down from the last fiscal’s Rs 102 crore, a cut of Rs 18 crore in the Union budget for 2016-17 announced on Monday.

The MC had proposed a budget of Rs 572 crore under the plan head and Rs 500 crore under the non-plan head during MC House meeting held on February 12. Mayor Arun Sood had then claimed that he would bring grant-in-aid of Rs 547 crore from the Chandigarh administration.

The Congress members on Monday said: “You gave lollipop to city residents by approving the budget,” as they offered him lollipop during the House meet.

The mayor said they threw lollipops at me and even broke a glass lying on my table. Regarding the cut in the budget, the mayor said: “The Congress is to be blamed for this as during its tenure, it failed to utilise the budget following which Centre took a harsh step and slashed our budget. We will pursue our case with UT administration and the Union government and will ensure that no development work is hit.”
