The city reported first swine flu death of the season after a 42-year-old Sector 37 resident, Shyam Verma, died at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on Thursday evening.
So far, four swine flu cases have been reported in the city. Swine flu is a respiratory disease with symptoms that include fever, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body ache and fatigue.
The Chandigarh health department had recently launched a house-to-house inspection across the city to detect swine flu.
Nodal officer, UT health department, Dr Gaurav Aggarwal, said: “The patient was diagnosed with H1N1 and was admitted to the PGIMER five-six days ago. He used to travel often to Mukerian and Pathankot. He also said that all field units have been put on alert and directions have been issued to intensify field surveillance for influenza. Furthermore, those who had been in his contact were also given prophylactic treatment and surveillance was carried out in his residential area.
