After the success of the first edition of “Destination Punjab 2011” held in Amritsar, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the Punjab government is all set to organise the second edition of Destination Punjab from November 1 to 3 in the state’s industrial capital of Ludhiana.
The event is the extension of CII theme for Punjab - “Punjab going global - the sustainable way” with a special focus on “Indigenisation of defence procurement”. The event presents an excellent opportunity to explore and tap the diverse engineering industry of Punjab, a CII release stated here on Saturday.
“Destination Punjab will showcase the state’s industrial strengths, especially in the areas of engineering, light and heavy electrical, apparel and textiles, electronics systems and components, tools and hardware and general supplies,” it said.
New trends such as outsourcing of engineering services provides newer opportunities for growth as Punjab is fast emerging as a hub for the engineering industry, strongly supported by industrial centres like Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Mandi Gobindgarh.
The exhibition aims at providing a platform for industrial players to explore Punjab’s limitless engineering opportunities. A special highlight of the event will be the defence sector, as this remains an untapped market for the Punjab industry.
With India importing as much as 70% of its defence equipment and spares from abroad, the opportunity to offset this dependence and indigenise India’s defence procurement is expected to be as large as $12 billion over the next 10 years, the release said, adding that since the defence sector needs not just hi-tech equipment, precision engineering parts and electronic systems, but also basic items like high altitude clothing, auto components, steelware, light electrical and processed food, the untapped opportunities in this sector are immense.
