Chandigarh has recorded warmest January in the past six years. The average maximum temperature was as high as 19.6 degrees Celsius in January. Weather officials have predicted warm February as well.

Maximum temperature remained above normal throughout the month, except on four days when the day’s temperature dipped to below normal. Nights were equally warmer with average minimum temperature recorded at 7.9 degrees.

Since 2010, a common trend in temperature has been noticed. While the average maximum temperature increases in one year, it shows a dip in the next year and vice-versa. But average day’s temperature never crossed the mark of 19 degrees in the past seven years, as it did in January 2016.

Talking about the reasons, officer from the meteorological department said, “Weak and shallow western disturbances because of El-Niño effect are the main reasons behind warm winters. It has also led to poor rainfall. Its impact will remain till March end.”
