The improvement trust and the municipal corporation seem to be sleeping over the matter and said they were helpless.

"Several notices have been shot off to people involved in commercial activities from residential complexes that come under the improvement trust," MM Vyas, chairman of the improvement trust, said. "However, people themselves do not want to end commercial activity in their areas." He said the trust had received many complaints regarding the issue.

Commercial activities from residential areas is going on unabated in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar and Sarabha Nagar among other areas.

"Vested interests are involved in conversion of residential properties into commercial ones," Col Harjap Singh, chairman of the Traders and Property Owners Association, Ludhiana, said. "This causes a lot of hardship to people who reside in these areas." He said commercialisation of residential areas would not only affect the present generation, but also the future generation.
