The Congress has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the auction of a monogrammed pinstriped suit that carries his name and which he wore during the meeting with US President Barack Obama in January.
The auction was in Surat on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference here, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) general secretary Raj Kumar said the PM should explain who had gifted him such an expensive suit. "Modi was wearing suit stitched in the United Kingdom, even thought he was pitching for 'Make in India'," he added.
The Congress leader also accused the PM of collecting money in the name of charity, and sought clarity on the state of the government's economic health. The state Congress general secretary said the party would hold a parallel auction of common man's clothes to keep India's dignity. "It will be outside the district administrative complex on Thursday, and the collected money will go into treating swine flu," he said.
The leader also criticised the Modi government for its failing to bring black money from the Swiss bank accounts within 100 days of taking over as promised before the May 2014 parliamentary elections. Kumar accused the PM of ignoring the drug menace in Punjab and failing to control it.
