A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, who had lost in the recently-held municipal corporation polls here, allegedly opened fire on the winner Congress councillor and his supporters while they were celebrating their victory in ward number 19 here on Tuesday.

The incident took place at about 3:30 pm when newly-elected Congress councillor Beant Singh Randhawa was distributing sweets in the North Estate colony under the ward.

Randhawa, who defeated SAD candidate Rajinder Singh Mann aka Raju Mann, alleged that he, along with his supporters, was celebrating the victory in North Estate at about 3:30 pm on Tuesday when Mann came with his supporters and opened fire aiming at him. “The bullet didn’t hit me but I, with others, ran into a nearby house to save ourselves as Mann continued to fire more shots,” he alleged. In a close contest, Randhawa had defeated Mann by a margin of 43 votes.

On the other hand, Mann alleged that Congress supporters along with Randhawa were making obscene gestures towards him and their aggressive postures were suggesting that they might attack him and he had to open fire in air in self-defence from his licensed weapon.
