Subeg Singh, a supporter of senior Akali leader Ranwinder Singh Pappu Ramoowala, tried to immolate himself during the protest by Pappu's group on the Moga-Ferozepur national highway. However, the police reached the spot and took Subeg Singh into custody immediately before he could set himself ablaze and rushed him to Dr Mathura Dass Pahwa civil hospital here.

Jatinder Singh Kahira, senior superintendent of police (SSP), said that a heavy police force had been deployed near the truck union complex in advance as it was apprehended that the two groups might clash with each other over the issue of loading trucks.

It may be mentioned here that that nine months ago, the district magistrate-cum-deputy commissioner had imposed Section 145 of CrPC at the union's complex due to a dispute among different Akali groups. No work was being allowed to be carried out in the truck union office complex.
