The police on Monday arrested its own anti-narcotics cell inspector for involvement in a case related to drug money seizure.
The accused identified as Rameshpal Singh is posted as in-charge, anti-narcotics cell in Moga.
The inquiry conducted by Moga deputy superintendent of police (DSP, investigation) Harinder Singh indicted inspector Rameshpal Singh for not showing seizure of drug money worth ₹1.44 lakh found during a raid at a peddler’s house in Moga on August 7.
Acting on the report, Moga senior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Toor ordered the arrest of the accused inspector.
“We have adopted zero tolerance towards drug menace in the state and will take strict action against the culprit,” Toor said.
A case under Section 7 and (13) 2 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 was registered against the accused.
Police had arrested a drug peddler, Sunita Rani and seized 5kg of poppy husk from her possession on August 7. The local police had co-ordinated with the anti-narcotics cell to conduct the raid at her residence in Moga. During the search, police had found ₹2.44 lakh and ornaments. However, inspector Rameshpal had returned ₹97,000 and the ornaments to Sunita’s son and daughter. He had then asked investigating officer, Krishan Kumar to show ₹1,580 in recovery and had kept ₹1.44 lakh for himself.
“The inspector was produced before the local court on Sunday, which sent him to 14 days of judicial custody. We have also recovered ₹1.2 lakh drug money from the accused,” police said.
