Embezzlement by education officials: probe begins, raids on

The city police on Monday started inquiry into the embezzlement of funds by 17 education officers (all retired now) and conducted raids at various locations in the state.

The city police on Monday started inquiry into the embezzlement of funds by 17 education officers (all retired now) and conducted raids at various locations in the state.

The accused were employed with the district education office in Jalandhar. A police party initiated raids in the city and its surrounding areas to arrest the accused, after an FIR was registered against them on Saturday.

The local police on Monday visited the office of district education officer to procure more evidences in the case. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP Central) Devdutt Sharma, the investigating officer in the case, said a special team has been formed in this connection.

It has been learnt that the Punjab education department is closely working with the local police to provide vital inputs, as the scam involves crores of rupees.

The city police had registered a case against Jagjit Singh, Usha Khadotra, HL Rakha, Balwant Singh, Hari Singh, Santokh Singh, Gurmukh Singh, Harjit Kaur Gill, Avtar Singh, RL Badal, Harinderpal Singh, Balbir Singh, Joginder Dass, Mahinder Kumar, Amrit Singh, Surinderjit Singh and Smasar Singh for cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and corruption.

The FIR further states that they had also not sent sports funds on time and did not disburse them properly. The vigilance department had conducted an investigation over the complaint and sent report to the commissionerate police to register a case.
