The victim has been identified as Sita Ram, 30, who is an electrician in a factory in industrial area on Chandigarh Road.

Ram, who suffered 50% burns, was rushed to Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital from where he was referred to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where his condition is stated to be serious.

According to doctors, Ram suffered burns on the face, chest and abdomen area.

In his statement to the police, Ram said he and his seven-year-old son Vishal Chauhan were asleep, when four unidentified men entered their room around 1 am. The miscreants over powered him by holding his arms and legs and poured acid from his face to abdomen from a can, before fleeing the spot.

Ram's wife was away to her maternal house at the time of the incident. It was Ram's parents who rushed him to the hospital.

On being informed, the police reached the spot and recovered a bag, a can in which the acid was filled and a paper slip on which an Uttar Pradesh address was scribbled.

Inspector Kamaldeep Singh, media coordinator of Ludhiana Police, said the victim didn't recognise any of the attackers, adding that the police were investigating the matter from various angles.

The Moti Nagar police have registered a case under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified accused.
