The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday directed the Punjab police to file the status report in Gurdaspur police firing case of March last year in which a person was killed and one seriously injured during a protest.
The directions came from the division bench-comprising chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and justice Augustine George Masih during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation filed by non-governmental organization, Lawyers for Human Rights International seeking probe from central bureau of investigation.
FIR was registered in the case on March 29 at police station Gurdaspur and later inspector general (crime), Punjab, was entrusted the probe. Jaspal Singh was killed in police firing and Ranjit Singh was seriously injured. The state government had later disbursed Rs 5 lakh to deceased's family and Rs 2 lakh to the family of Ranjit Singh from chief minister's relief fund.
The petitioner had informed that after fixing of the date of execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana, co-convict in assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh and others, for March 31, state people showed their resentment. On March 28, few Shiv Sena members gave beatings to some of the agitating Sikh youth and took off their turbans in which the FIR was registered on the same day at police station city Gurdaspur.
It was added that on March 29 around 20/30 Sikh youth were sitting outside Gurudwara Ramgaria, Tibri road, Gurdaspur doing Simran (saying prayers) and also seeking arrest of Shiv Sena youth. It was then that around 100 police personnel reached the spot and without any warning first opened fire in the air and later targeted the unarmed youth sitting on peaceful protest in which Jaspal Singh was killed and Ranjit Singh injured.
