The walled city, which hosts Golden Temple and is home to many heritage buildings, is all set to get a facelift under the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY), Centre’s project of Rs 69.31 crore.
The Union ministry of urban development launched the scheme on January 21, 2015 to promote the holistic development of heritage cities. The scheme aims to preserve while revitalising the ‘soul’ of India’s heritage cities, building upon their unique character for a more aesthetically appealing, accessible, liveable, safer and sustainable city.
In the initial phase, 12 different cities were selected from the country and Amritsar is one of them.
At a cost of Rs 32 crore, as many as 13 roads, which lead to Golden Temple will be reconstructed. The work of laying tiles on three such roads—which start from Gate Hakiman, Gate Bhagatanwala and Gate Gillwali—has started. The work is expected to start on other roads too, said sources of Amritsar Municipal Corporation.
These roads will get rid of open drainage system. Old streets lights will also be replaced. Facelift is being provided to all the major locations inside the walled city.

{{/usCountry}}The market, which starts from Golden Temple to Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib, will be provided a heritage look on the pattern of the heritage street built from Town Hall to Golden Temple, said Sorabh Arora, joint commissioner of the civic body. The joint commissioner added that the work will be completed soon.
