Himachal: Jakhu ropeway trial fails, trolley crashes

The Jakhu ropeway project was caught in a fresh controversy on Wednesday when one of the four trolleys used for trial runs detached from the cable and came down crashing in the backyard of a residential building. The trolleys stopped for a while after crossing the first tower and instead of going toward Jakhu hills, they started moving towards the starting point and stopped mid-way. While three of them were left suspended in the air, one came down crashing.

Locals said the administration was informed well in time but it took almost two hours for the officials to reach the spot. The incident has caused the ropeway company a loss of `15 lakh. “A new trolley would be imported from Switzerland,” said an official. No loss of life was reported.

The ropeway would now be ready for commercial activities by March 2016. The district administration has asked the ropeway company to file a report regarding the incident.
