In spite of the fire that broke out in a stove repair shop in Gulshan Bazaar on Wednesday, aided by the alleged illegal storing of more than 10 LPG cylinders in the shop, shopkeepers and the administration seems to have taken little note of the incident.
Many shops across the city continue to illegally store a large number of LPG cyclinders for filling small cylinders and making huge profits in the process.
This reporter visited many markets, including near the MC building and found little impact on the illegal business.
Residents have demanded immediate action against such shops. Even the administration promised strict action against such practices on Wednesday.
However, no concrete action has been taken as yet. Speaking to HT, district food and supply controller Baljinder Singh Dhillon said that storage of up to five cylinders has been only allowed.
He added that action will soon be taken against unauthorised use of domestic LPG cylinders and added that the department would conduct raids in such shops on Thursday.
Additional deputy commissioner Amarjeet Pal said that he had directed Nawanshahr Tehsildar Shiv Kumar to identify these shops and take necessary action against them. He alleged that he was waiting for an inquiry report from tehsildar Shiv Kumar.
"As soon as the report reaches, action will be initiated against the defaulters," said ADC Pal.
Investigation officer Shiv Kumar said that he had recorded the statements of shop owner Daya Sagar's son Vinay Kumar and the family of Ali Sher Miyan, which resided on the first floor of shop and other adjoining shopkeepers on Wednesday. He said that he will submit his report on Thursday.
