The British Columbia Teacher Regulation Branch has issued a 25-year teaching ban on a former Surrey high school teacher serving a life sentence for murdering his pregnant wife.
Mukhtiar Singh Panghali was convicted of second-degree murder of his 4 months pregnant wife in March 2011. Manjit Panghali, 31, went missing after attending a prenatal yoga class in Surrey on Oct 18, 2006. Her charred remains were found in Delta five days later. An autopsy revealed she had been strangled. Panghali, who waited 26 hours before reporting his wife was missing, received the mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility for 11 years.
The discipline decision reads that "(Panghali's) actions are entirely inconsistent with the standards expected of teachers," and ruled that the extended 25-year ban was needed "to confirm that teachers remain subject to high standards of moral conduct which support the public confidence in the profession as a whole."
