The shortage of urea was at the focal point of Indian Youth Congress' (IYC) dharna on Sunday held as a part of the ongoing Kisan Satyagrah campaign at Gidderbaha.
Pointing to the non-availability of urea to the farmers of the state, IYC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring lambasted the Modi government for turning a blind eye towards their issues.
"We will take the issues of the farmers to every street. Punjab is the most badly affected state, which is otherwise called the food bowl of India. Moreover the proposed amendment in the land acquisition bill has made the farmer community very depressed," Raja said, addressing the protestors gathered here.
Raja lauding the UPA-regime and said its pro-farmer policies had brought prosperity to the farmers.
"In Congress-led UPA government, the farmers were given highest minimum support price for their crops. There was no dearth of fertilisers. Even the fuel prices were controlled. The crop of the farmers was immediately purchased from mandis, the farmer did not have to wait long for their produce to be purchased by government agencies. Today all this is finished. Only marketing is left with this Modi Government and nothing is delivered at the ground level," Raja said.
Accusing the SAD-BJP alliance in the state, Raja asked why does SAD not raise the issue of farmers with the union government. "They are befooling people of Punjab. Why doesn't the chief minister of Punjab visit the union agriculture minister give him the actual picture," asked Raja.
