Will Jaitley fight Amritsar LS bypoll as referendum on note ban? Cong’s Captain wants to know

Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday asked the BJP to make Union finance minister Arun Jaitley contest the Lok Sabha byelection from Amritsar as a referendum on the Narendra Modi government’s “dictatorial” demonetisation move. Reacting to gold restrictions imposed by the Modi government on Thursday, Amarinder said these kind of things happened under the Nazis in Germany. “So is the Modi government trying to replicate the Nazi ideology in India? Amarinder defeated Jaitley by a huge margin in the 2014 LS contest from Amritsar, but has recently quit the seat and is set to fight the assembly polls due early next year.

The former chief minister also said the allocation of Congress ticket for all seats for upcoming Punjab assembly elections would be finalised on December 3, when the Congress electoral committee meets under party president Sonia Gandhi.

Asked about Navjot Singh Sidhu, he said he was hopeful of meeting him soon and expressed hope that the cricketer-turned-politician would play an important role in the party’s poll campaigns.

Reacting to gold restrictions imposed by the Modi government on Thursday, Amarinder said these kind of things happened under the Nazis in Germany. “So is the Modi government trying to replicate the Nazi ideology in India? Gold is a symbol of marital happiness and has a lot of significance for Indian women,” he said in a statement issued here on Thursday.
