Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal of “double standards” on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue and “backstabbing” the people of Punjab.
Addressing a press conference in Amritsar, the deputy chief minister pointed to an affidavit given in the Supreme Court by the Delhi government, led by Kejriwal, favouring the completion of the SYL canal, thereby allowing the waters belonging to Punjab to flow into Haryana. “By giving such an affidavit, Kejriwal has shown where his loyalties lay--definitely not with Punjab,” he said, adding that Kejriwal’s family belongs to Haryana.
Referring to Kejriwal’s statement given during his tour of Punjab last month that the state had no surplus water to spare, Sukhbir said, “Even when he had issued the statement, I doubted his intentions. The affidavit has exposed his real face.”
He said the Delhi chief minister is in the habit of shifting stands; he had once said that he and his AAP would never contest elections but they did.
He appealed to the people of Punjab not to be misled by Kejriwal and his party. He claimed that only the Shiromani Akali Dal is sincere about Punjab and its people and during nine years of the SAD-BJP rule, unprecedented development had taken place in the state.
