Social activist and photographer, Brij Bedi, was admitted in the emergency wing of the hospital after complaining of breathing and kidney-related issues on January 28.

He was later shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the same hospital.

“He breathed his last around 11:00 am in the hospital on Sunday,” officials said.

“Amritsar has lost a man who loved his city the most. He was someone who spent his life addressing the cause of the needy. We will carry forward his service,” Kiran Bedi, who was present at the hospital when her husband passed away, tweeted.

Kiran met Brij on the Service Club courts in Amritsar.

He had pursued a master in History from Punjab University in Chandigarh. Brij was the founder of Citizen Forum Vidya Mandir, an institute in Maqboolpura in Amritsar, which provides free education to the kids of victims of drug addiction.

“He was deeply concerned and attached to the problem of drug addiction in Punjab. He was a courageous voice for several causes,” Bedi tweeted.
