Land grab attempt: NRI alleges police torture

An NRI who decided to stay in the country to facilitate his son's studies was allegedly stripped and tortured at the Bhogpur police station in August last year. He claimed that intentions of land-grab were behind the illegal detention and torture.

Ranjit Singh, 50, a resident of Mujrewal village, narrated the alleged instance to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jalandhar zone, who is also IGP (NRI affairs). He now lives in Greater Vancouver city in Canada where he is a certified general accountant.

"As my son had got an admission in medical college, the family decided to stay in India, till his studies were complete. I told Gursharan Singh, son of my sister-in-law, that I would myself be I will be looking after my land measuring about 25 acres," he said.

Gursharan apparently was eyeing the land and was not happy to yield control over the land.

"Gursharan, along with two others connived with Bhogpur police station sub-inspector Harbans Singh to force me to go back to Canada," he said. As part of the plan, the SI and three other policemen whisked away the NRI into a police station where he was stripped and
tortured.

"Despite complaints to the senior superintendent of police (SSP), Jalandhar, rural, Yurinder Singh Hayer, NRI cell and Punjab State Human Rights Commission, nothing has moved," he said.

However, SSP Hayer denied receiving any complaint from the NRI and said that now that the matter had been brought to his notice, he would look into the matter.

After listening to Ranjit Singh, Deo asked the police officials concerned into the matter and take necessary action to ensure justice.

SP, operations, Gurmit Singh, and DSP, Adampur, Parminder Singh, have been asked to look into the matter.
