Traffic police have started issuing challans to violators after a month’s relaxation. A total of 683 violators were challaned in the last six days for drink-driving, riding without helmet, triple riding and wrong parking. The drive was revived again on April 19 and focuses on four of these traffic violations.
Former police commissioner Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh had ordered that no challans willl be issued in Ludhiana for a month as a goodwill gesture. After reviving the drive, the department has issued an average of 80 challans daily for driving without helmet, an average of seven challans daily for triple riding and drinkdriving, and an average of 15 challans daily for wrong parking.
In January and February, an average of 307 challans were being issued daily for driving without helmet, 23 for triple riding, 202 for wrong parking and seven challans for drink driving.
A traffic activist, Rahul Verma, said the department was working effectively for the past few months. “There was no need for such a gap. In the month’s break, police did not even initiate any awareness drive. I don’t know what the former police chief wanted to figure out from this. However, it is time to enforce the law again and it is good that the department has started acting strictly against traffic violators,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}Additional commissioner of police, traffic, Dhruv Dahiya said, “We have started the drive again by focusing on some specific violations in some particular areas. We will increase the restriction with time. Apart from concentrating on these violations, we are also working to maintain smooth traffic flow in the city.“
