Kuljinderpreet Singh, 32, was headed back to Barnala after a business visit in Ludhiana when he stopped his Hyundai Verna at an eatery for dinner around 9.30pm. He ended up in a situation that he still cannot quite digest.

The crime — an addition to the one-a-month average of carjackings in the industrial hub of Punjab — occurred on the prime Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway near Westend Mall. (HT Representative Image)

“A man — he seemed to be in his mid-20s — opened the door and sat on the front seat next to me. I was startled and asked him to get out. But he took out a pistol,” Kuljinder, an environment engineer, said. Another man then appeared next to the driver’s window and told him to leave the car. “When I refused, he pointed a pistol at my forehead and pulled me out.” Two more men then occupied the rear seats and they drove towards the Mullanpur Dakha side.

The crime — an addition to the one-a-month average of carjackings in the industrial hub of Punjab — occurred on the prime Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway near Westend Mall. It underlines how the Safe City project, meant to cover the entire city with security cameras and e-monitoring, remains marred by delay and is yet to realise its target. Police are now depending on the cameras installed at the mall to find clues.

There was a police checkpoint on this road ahead of the February 4 Punjab assembly elections. Not after that.
