A 25-year-old man undergoing treatment for depression at a private hospital, allegedly committed suicide inside his ward on Wednesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Kamalpreet Singh, a resident of Chandigarh, who had been admitted to Mind Plus hospital a few days ago. The incident came to light at around 9:15 pm when a doctor went to Kamalpreet’s room and found him hanging from a ceiling fan. Following the incident, the family members of the deceased staged a protest outside the hospital on Thursday evening, alleging negligence by the staff.
Kamalpreet’s father, Harpal Singh, said, “My son had slipped into depression after finding out that I have been diagnosed with cancer. We had requested the hospital staff to allow an attendant with Kamalpreet but they refused, saying that the staff will take good care of him.”
He added, “On Wednesday night, I got a call from the hospital authorities that my son had hanged himself following which we rushed to the hospital. My son has died due to the negligence of the doctors and the staff.”
Based on Harpal Singh’s complaint, the police registered a case under Sections 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the doctor and staff of the hospital.
Inspector Jatinder Singh, SHO at Division Number 5 police station, said, “Initially, the parents of the victim alleged that he was murdered following which we scanned the CCTV cameras installed in the hospital.
The footage reveals that at around 8.15pm, a nurse had administrated medicine to him, after which he was served dinner. And at around 9.15pm, a doctor along with staff, went inside the victim’s room for a checkup and found him hanging. Sumit, the hospital manager, said, “The patient’s behaviour was extremely aggressive due to which he was placed in a room next the nursing station.”
