Police arrested a man posing as a senior criminal investigation department (CID) officer, who allegedly duped at least ten people of Rs 58,000 each on the pretext of securing jobs for them in the CID as ‘private officers’.
The accused, identified as Dinesh Kumar, told the victims that they will be assigned cases to solve and issued fake identity cards of different ranks of the CID to the job aspirants.
When the victims did not get a call from the CID, they asked the department about it.
In reply, the department told them that they don’t have a position of ‘private staff’.
After realising they have been duped, the victims filed a complaint against Dinesh at Basti Jodhewal police station.
Assistant sub-inspector Rachpal Singh, who is investigating the matter, said police were questioning the accused to know if more persons were involved in the fraud.
The complainant, Tulsi Ram of Phambran Road, said he ran a printing shop. He said Dinesh introduced himself as the director general of CID.
“He pretended as if he is talking to senior police officers on the phone in front of us. Influenced by him, we asked him to recruit us in the department following which he told us that he wanted to make a team of 10 officers and asked us to bring eight more people,” said Tulsi Ram.

{{/usCountry}}He added, “We convinced our relatives and friends to join the department. He took Rs 45,000 from each of us for recruitment and issued identity cards to all of us under different ranks. He also took Rs 13,000 from each person and provided us with a walkie-talkie set. To convince us, he also created a website and put our pictures and information on it,” he added.
