The Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) has decided to clean the Model Town and its parks as a part of much-hyped BJP government campaign 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' (Clean India Mission) on Sunday, despite knowing the area considered one of the best maintained and clean across the city.
As per the information, the MCJ along with the district administration officials will launch the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' at the Central Park in the Model Town from 7.30 am where officials, local MLA, councilors and various NGOs will also participate in the event.
Although, Kazi Mandi, Gandhi Camp, Basti Bawa Khel, Industrial area, Santokh Pura, Ladowali, Focal Point areas and many other localities are witnessing the open heaps of garbage and wastage. But the MCJ has turned a blind eye towards it and decided to clean the Model Town, which is considered as one of most cleaned locality in the city.
Jagdish Raj, Leader of Opposition of the MCJ said, "Congress workers has decided to boycott this campaign as this is just an eye wash campaign of clicking pictures to please their political bosses nothing else."
He further said if Mayor is really serious about the clean city campaign he should start the campaign from slum areas of the city, as city is already short of garbage bins due to in-complete implementation of solid waste management project.
However, the administration and the MCJ has also failed to start this kind of campaign to make the city clean for the past five months, as they had just once launched a campaign under the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' to observe the Republic Day on January 26 on the surroundings of the district administrative complex.

Mayor Sunil Jyoti said, "Before the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' a yoga camp is also being organised at the Central Park. The district administration officials along with the local MLA will participate in the clean city campaign. We will launch this campaign in other localities as well in coming days."
