A policeman was manhandled when he confronted a group of people who were inviting bets for a game of dice from roadside near the Clock Tower here on Friday.
The accused had set up their ‘open-air casino’ where a crowd had assembled, leading to obstruction in the vehicular traffic. When assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Varinderpal Singh of traffic wing confronted them, he was roughed up. The accused didn’t stop there as they videotaped the entire incident and then posted it on social media, apparently to embarrass the cop.

The ASI alleged that the accused also tried to put money in his pocket with the intension to implicate him in a graft case.
The ASI lodged an FIR against Vikas Chhabra, alias Mehndi, and his three unidentified accomplices with the Division 1 police in this regard. The accused fled the spot soon after the incident.
“The accused thrashed me and tore my uniform. They also tried to put currency notes in my pocket so that they could accuse me for accepting bribe from them,” said the ASI.

{{/usCountry}}Additional deputy commissioner of police (City 1) Joginder Singh said the police had launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
Some locals alleged that the gambling operators had the support of local leaders and police seldom act against them.
