Metal rings bearing unique numbers have been tagged with the legs of over 20 migratory birds by the district wildlife department and three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) during a two-day drive at Keshopur Chhamb Wetland near Gurdaspur from March 30 to 31.
These unique numbers will help the department and wildlife clubs in monitoring their habitats, behaviours and destinations. The data collected thus will be of great importance to the wildlife agencies and NGOs.
District forest and wildlife officer Rajesh Mahajan told Hindustan Times on Tuesday that the unique number tagged birds were of 'moorhens' and 'spot-billed duck' breeds, which came here from Syberia and Russia.
He said workers and volunteers from the district forest and wildlife department (DFWLD), Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) participated in the drive.
The metallic rings used to tag the birds were harmless, he said.
The birds were caught by laying nets at night.
After the tagging, if wildlife agencies catch these birds with unique number at some other wetlands across the world, they can get the requisite data about their movement and other things related to them.
