Punjab Congress president captain Amarinder Singh is touring villages in the constituency to seek votes for party candidate Vijay Sathi.
On Thursday, he met prominent personalities of the town and said Sathi's rival candidate Joginder Pal Jain had betrayed the constituency's voters by joning the Shiromani Akali Dal after election at the behest of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Addressing lawyers at a function organised by the district bar association, the former CM said Punjab was on the path of social unrest because of "bad economy" and "worse law and order".
"Incidents such as the killing of an assistant sub-inspector of police in Amritsar by an Akali leader and the beating up of an assistant inspector general of police in Ludhiana by another youth Akali leader were signs to warn Punjab," he added.
No investor was prepared to come to Punjab when the native industry was moving to other states, said Amarinder. "As a result, unemployment is growing and young people are falling into bad habits," he added. "Punjab has nearly 50 lakh desperate, jobless people, which can lead to social unrest."
The former chief minister asked the government to spell out what difference it had made to the people's lives. Referring to the promises of surplus electricity, he said even now when there was very little demand of energy, there were power cuts for six hours in cities. "The electricity projects which the state government claims to be creating are in the private sector and their owners have no commitment to the state, even though the government has grabbed land from farmers and offered it to them," said Amarinder.
