Tall claims of the police of night patrolling in the city were laid bare when four unidentified armed men robbed a money exchanger and his son of Rs 15 lakh at Vij complex near Jamalpur Chowk on Monday night.
The accused also injured the victims — Rakesh Vij (55), and his son Sahil Vij (32), who runs a mobile shop. Both are undergoing treatment at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and their condition is stated to be stable.
Jamalpur SHO Satnam Singh said, “Last night, we got a complaint of robbery at Vij Complex. Police reached the spot and victims were rushed to the civil hospital. Sensing their condition, doctors referred them to the CMCH.”
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident occurred at about 11.30 when Vij and his son were counting cash at their shop. Rakesh Vij’s brother-in-law Satish Malhotra, who filed the complaint, told police that an i10 car stopped outside the shop. Two car occupants entered the showroom, and other two remained inside the car,” the SHO said.

{{/usCountry}}Singh said, “He told that the assailants tried to snatch the bag containing cash from them. When they resisted, they attacked them, and grabbed the bag. Before fleeing, the miscreants shuttered the showroom. After some time, Rakesh called me. I reached the spot and also informed police.”
Victims used to deposit money in bank daily
“Though Rajiv and his son used to deposit the day’s earning in the bank daily, they missed it on Monday. So, they were supposed to take the money home,” said Malhotra.
An auto driver, who saw the i10 occupants fleeing from the spot in a hurry, sensed something wrong and gave them a chase. But the accused managed to flee towards Kohara.
Auto driver Gobind and his associate Mani said they called up at police helpline number 100 for at least 10 times, but got no response.
Malhotra said Sahil underwent a surgery at CMCH on Tuesday.
The SHO said, “No close-circuit television (CCTV) camera was installed in the complex due to which police did not get any clue about the accused.
Police are scanning the footage of CCTVs in the adjoining areas.”
“Police have registered a case of robbery against unidentified accused. Police will record the statements of the victims, to get details of the accused, after they regain consciousness. Police suspect the attack was pre-planned and proper recce was done before executing the crime,” he added.
