Incessant rains brought the city to a virtual standstill in the wee hours of Saturday as roads and underpasses got flooded with water.

Incessant rains brought the city to a virtual standstill in the wee hours of Saturday as roads and underpasses got flooded with water.

The municipal corporation’s claims of Ludhiana being rain ready went for a toss as water flowing from Buddha Nullah and Ganda Nullah entered houses and shops in areas including New Kundan Puri, Chandar Nagar and other places in the city that is set to become a smart city.

According to the meteorological department, 112.2 mm rainfall was recorded in the city.

In New Hargobind Nagar and Mohar Singh Nagar, polluted water of Ganda Nullah washed away the banks and entered into houses and shops. Resident complained that despite repeated appeals the MC failed to complete the work to cover Ganda Nullah over the last six years.

With help of JCB machines and sand bags, the banks of the both the nullahs were later corrected but the residents kept struggling to clear the accumulated water from their houses and shops. It is learnt that in many houses, furniture got damaged due to dirty water.

Besides, the rainwater entered into the houses and shops in Field Gand, Miller Ganj, Dashmesh Nagar, Gill Road, Gill Chowk market, old city areas and many others as per the reports.

The city roads were flood in various areas including Dholewal, Transport Nagar, Samrala Chowk, Ghumar Mandi, Salem Tabri, College Road, Rani Jhansi Road, Dashmesh Nagar, Peeru Banda, Preet Palace Road, near Passport Office, Hambran Road, near Mata Rani Chowk, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Old GT Road, outside Railway Station, national highway 1 and Ferozepur Road, underpasses on Southern bypass.
