The Division Number 5 police have booked an NRI for allegedly duping the kin of a drug haul accused of Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of getting his name removed from the case.
The local police on October 14 had booked Nitin Goyal and his father Pawan Goyal of Moga, their relatives Bal Kishan and Krishan Kumar, and one Sadhu Singh of Moga, after unlicensed drugs worth Rs 10 crore were seized from the accused's factory in Baderan village near Baddi in Himachal Pradesh.
Following this, Sarvinder Singh, who is an NRI and native of Jagraon, approached Nirmal Singh of Moga, a relative of Sadhu Singh, claiming that he had contacts in the police and could help Sadhu go scot-free in return of Rs 30 lakh.
In his complaint to police, Nirmal alleged that they paid Rs 30 lakh to Sarvinder. However, they were shocked when the police produced a chargesheet against all accused, including Sadhu, in the case.
They then contacted Sarvinder, who misled them that he would ask the police to reinvestigate the case and clear Sadhu's name from the case. Smelling a rat, Sadhu's family contacted the police officers concerned, who told them that once the chargesheet was produced before the court, the police could not conduct a new inquiry.

{{/usCountry}}Thereafter, they filed a complaint and a case under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Sarvinder.
Assistant commissioner of police (crime) Gurbans Singh Bains said the police had launched a manhunt for the arrest of the accused, adding that more sections could be added in the FIR against Sarvinder.
