All officials of the Chandigarh Housing Board ( CHB) will have to retur n smartphones they had procured at the expense of the board. The board has framed a policy after its chief executive officer (CEO) SB Deepak Kumar demanded another smartphone last month.
Under the new policy, the returned phones will be auctioned. The board has also put a ceiling on reimbursement of mobile bills and broadband internet facility availed by officials. The policy will get final nod in the CHB governing body meet on Thursday.
From past several years, there was no policy and officials were getting the expensive mobile handsets at their own whims and fancies. The board chairmen, CEOs, secretaries and executive engineers have procured around 50 smartphones from the board funds. Also, the entire phone bill of officials was reimbursed, causing a huge loss to the board.
No ceiling has been put on the reimbursement of bills of landline phones installed in the office.
CHB chairman Maninder Singh said” “The policy has been framed after analysing the Union and Punjab government’s instructions on procuring mobile phones for officials.”
Last month, the board CEO had reportedly made a demand for a specific smartphone worth Rs 50,000 from the board. However, CHB secretary Adapa Karthik tur ned down the ‘demand’, saying there was no policy to provide electronic gadgets to the board officials. It is learnt that the CEO has already bought a high-end smartphone worth Rs 50,000 from the CHB funds.
