Chirag was walking beside his grandmother when the incident took place. It was the quick reaction shown by his grandmother that saved him from falling inside the open manhole. Passersby gathered there and accused the municipal corporation authorities of negligence.

Pawan Bawa, president, Sewer Workers’ Union, reached the spot and scolded the employees carrying out the cleaning work in the area. He directed the workers to be more careful in the future and avoid leaving open a manhole.

Meanwhile, motorists plying on Cool Road and Ladowali Road have been facing inconvenience due to several open manholes in these areas.

There are many spots in the city where the municipal corporation has installed machines for carrying out the sewer cleaning work and have also dug some places, but no flashers or reflectors have been put in place.

Residents said they have complained to the MC authorities time and again about the problem, but to no avail.

Municipal officials said directions have been issued to the workers not to leave any manhole open. In case any part is dug it should be marked properly, they added.

The workers, on the other hand, said they are not provided with flashers and reflectors and hence they put twigs and boulders around the area as markers.
