Setting up a wrong precedent and affecting the overall functioning of the PSPCL, several major departments and law enforment agencies, including the police department, primary health centres, government hospitals and dispensaries, the deputy commissioner’s office and the department of public health among other, have failed to pay the pending electricity bills worth Rs 21.12 crore since January 2015.
A total of 22 departments, including the deputy commissioner’s office, the Punjab police, municipal committee and water works, public health department, tehsil complex, government hospitals and dispensaries, irrigation department, public works department, government schools and information technology institutes, local bodies, central department, revenue department and others, have failed to pay the heed to the power department’s repeated alrams regarding the payment of the dues.
An official of the Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) said these departments have not paid the bills from January 1, 2015, to January 31, 2016.
“We can’t disconnect the power connections of the government departments as electricity is essential for the fucntioning of the government offices. However, several notices have been sent to them but to no vail.” Sources say the power bills worth over Rs 50 crore are also pending with several industrial units in the city.
Paramraj Singh Umrananagal, commissioner of police, said, “We are working on this. The pending bills will be cleared soon.” Renu Chattwal, civil surgeon, said, “We are not recived funds from the government for a long time, and as soon as we’ll be getting funds, the pending dues will be cleared.”
