As complaints poured in regarding stray dogs, Panchkula deputy commissioner Garima Mittal held a meeting with municipal corporation (MC) officials on Tuesday.
“It has become a big issue now and I have been getting complaints for the same. Media has also been highlighting it. That is why I took cognisance of the issue. There is a need of different departments to pitch in and coordinate,” said Mittal.
MC commissioner Lalit Siwach, city magistrate Mamta Sharma, and representatives of Resident Welfare Associations participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, Mittal said, “The problem of stray dogs and cattle is grave. We all have to put in efforts in this regard.” She directed the officials to get a survey done to find out the population of stray dogs in different areas .
Siwach appealed to citizens not to let their domestic cattle and dogs out on roads. He added that owners would have to pay penalty if the local body finds their animals straying on roads and could even face a first information report (FIR).
He clarified that for the first offence `5,000 would be charged and for the second `10,000 would be fined.

SECTOR-7 INCIDENTS TAKEN UP
Regarding the Sector-7 incident of rabid dog, Mittal said, “MC commissioner Lalit Siwach informed that it was a pet dog but as it had got rabies its owner had released him in the open. So, we need registration and vaccination of dogs.”
On July 19, a stray dog, alleged to be suffering from rabies, bit 11 people in Sector 7 and later when municipal corporation officials went to catch it, it died. There was hue and cry after that and the MC had to start its sterilisation drive.
Another incident happened on August 2 again in Sector 7 where seven people had become victims of a dog bite.
The next meeting in this regard would be conducted next month where MC will inform about sterlisation of dogs.
A monitoring committee under deputy director agriculture, health department and the MC has also been formed to check administering of oxytocin and liquid calcium to cows and buffaloes. They would conduct raids across the district.
