Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general-secretary Jagat Parkash Nadda on Sunday said that the 2014 parliamentary elections would be an acid test for the Congress and chief minister Virbhadra Singh.
Underplaying Congress' win in the bypoll to the Mandi parliamentary seat, Nadda termed Virbhadra's wife Pratibha Singh's victory from the seat as “no big achievement”.
“The acid test is still to come for him,” said Nadda, who was here for the 'Run for Unity' marathon organsied by the saffron party in the memory of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the first home minister of the country.
“Congress took over a year ago and Mandi byelection was held 6 months after that, so winning the byelection is not an indicator of what will happen,” Nadda added.
Accusing the Congress government of the ignoring people's interest, Nadda claimed that Virbhadra's style of politics was that of “vendetta, victimisation, demolition of institution, no concern for development, and visionless governance”.
Replying to a question on returning to state politics, Nadda said he was not eying any post. “I will be doing party work, but that does not require any post,” he said. Nadda said veteran BJP leader Shanta Kumar could be a potential candidate for the Kangra parliamentary seat. “He is among the most respected leaders in the state,” he said. “To contest or not is up to Shanta Kumar and the party high command, but I think is a strong candidate.”
