‘A good film makes you think’. This is the belief that the members of People’s Voice follow. Bygone are the days when films were only seen as a source of entertainment and parents would restrict their children. The thought process revolving around movies has undergone a sea change. Owing to this people here formed the organisation, a film society, People’s Voice.
The organisation has been silently working since many years showing real cinema without even charging a single penny. The organisation was formed 16 years ago in 2001. The members while talking to HT said that they found that people here were devoid of good and thought provoking cinema. Kulwinder Kumar, convener of the organisation said, “We started because nobody was able to see meaningful cinema, same kinds of films were coming and art movies and parallel cinema was dying under the garb of entertainment.” “We wanted everyone to believe that it is an art to see good films and how these films impact the thought process,” he said. Talking about the journey, the members said that they used to borrow projectors on rent when they started and then they would take the projectors to schools so that the students could learn from the films.
On last Sunday of every month, films are shown in Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall at 5 pm, where along with Indian movies, international films are also shown. After the show, the members also discuss interesting facts about the film with the viewers. The organisation has members who are doctors, servicemen and businessmen. They also started organising three-day Dalhousie film meet six years ago where they call directors and youngsters from colleges so that they get to know about the art cinema. Apart from this, they also have been organising Raikot Film meet that is held every year in October. The organisation also makes sure that they do not miss any school who asks them to show film to the students.
