Hearing aids and motorised tricycles on subsidised rates will be provided to the poor and needy persons by the Punjab government in SAS Nagar district under various social welfare schemes being run in cooperation with the Government of India.
Deputy commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said a needy person can contact the district social security officer and BDPOs and CDPOs concerned for the same. Sidhu said, “Motorised tricycles have been developed to facilitate the handicapped person at a cost of Rs 35,000, on which government will give a subsidy of Rs 25,000. The person has to pay only Rs 10,000.”
He said these tricycles will be provided to the needy persons of 16 years and above with 80% physical disability wherein monthly income of applicants’ parents should not be more than Rs 15,000.
Sidhu further said the hearing aids will be provided to hearing-impaired persons, including cochlear implants costing Rs 6 lakh. This total expenditure will be done by the state government in cooperation with the government of India. He said in Punjab, Guru Gobind Singh Medical College in Faridkot, PGIMER in Chandigarh and Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 in Chandigarh have been authorised for implanting the hearing aids.
He said the applicant for hearing aid must be above five years age and monthly income of the applicant’s parents should not be more than Rs 15,000. In case, the monthly income of the applicant’s parents is between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 then a subsidy of Rs 3 lakh will be provided by the government and the rest of the amount of Rs 3 lakh is to be spent by the parents.
