Punjabi Sahit Academy holds meeting to promote Punjabi

Several writers, poets and educationists and members of PSA were part of the meeting who lamented that the language was losing its importance with advancing time. Most participants slapped the blame on Punjab government for the same.

PSA secretary, writer Gulzar Singh Pandher revealed that the main concern was that Punjab government which launched the 'language act' in 2008 to foster Punjabi had failed to follow the rules and regulations and rules as per it. "According to the act, Punjabi should be an obligatory subject till Class 10 in all schools irrespective the school is run by the government or not and even if it is a convent. Secondly, the act says that 'language formula' must be adhered to which in simple terms means, all schools and governmental institutions should first give preference to the mother tongue, then national language and then English,." Pandher.

Agreeing to Pandher, president PSA Sukhdev Singh Sirsa said, "2015 is around the corner and the the regulations as per 'language act' are not being followed since 2008. If Punjabi will continue to get ignored, the coming generations may not even get chance to speak their very own mother tongue? All school principals must take interest to promote the language."
